John Federico, MD
Dr. John Federico is a board-certified general and thoracic surgeon in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He is skilled in both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive robotic, thoracoscopic, and laparoscopic techniques. Dr. Federico is a member of Coastal Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, where he cares for patients diagnosed with lung cancer, as well as diseases of the pleura, like mesothelioma.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Federico attended Georgetown University for both his undergraduate and medical school education. After earning his medical degree, he completed Thoracic Surgery fellowships at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, England, and a Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery fellowship at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ontario.[1]
Following completion of his medical education and training, Dr. Federico served as associate professor of surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and as Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. He then went to Kalispell, Montana, where he developed a thoracic surgical service line serving the state of Montana.[1]
Dr. Federico is currently a thoracic surgeon at Coastal Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He has privileges at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Dr. Federico’s expertise is in endoscopy, including lung cancer staging, complex bronchoscopy for treatment of obstructing cancers and esophageal lesions, and laparoscopic techniques for treating tumors of the airway, lungs, chest wall, and mediastinum. He specializes in treating complex conditions, like pleural mesothelioma.

Dr. Federico is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Research
Dr. Federico’s research interests address all aspects of thoracic surgery, particularly the impact of minimally invasive procedures on patient outcomes.
He has been published in many peer-reviewed medical journals and invited to speak on pulmonary and cardiothoracic conditions nationally and internationally.[2]
