Sherif R.Z. Abdel-Misih, MD
Dr. Sherif R.Z. Abdel-Misih is a surgical oncologist at Stony Brook Medicine and an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York.
Dr. Abdel-Misih specializes in surgical oncology with a focus on gastrointestinal cancers and other cancer tumor types including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. He has extensive surgical oncology training in the use of advanced techniques, including the novel procedure that combines cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, which has been shown to significantly extend patient survival. He believes that the foundation of good treatment involves multi-disciplinary treatment strategies that include chemotherapy and radiation, as well as surgery.[1]
Dr. Abdel-Misih forges strong relationships with his patients to better understand their unique personal backgrounds while providing the comprehensive care that each one needs.
Education and Career
Dr. Abdel-Misih earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed a General Surgery internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic followed by fellowship training in Surgical Oncology at Ohio State University and Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, where he remained as a physician, Associate Professor of Surgery in the department of Surgical Oncology, and Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program before taking on his role at Stony Brook Medicine.[1]
