Dr. Giuseppe Giaccone ranks among the world’s most highly respected practitioners in the treatment and study of lung cancer and in developmental therapeutics. He is a medical oncologist at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and serves as Chief of Thoracic Oncology and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center. In addition to his groundbreaking work in early clinical research, he is an expert in the biology and treatment of lung cancer, thymomas, and other solid tumors, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He has played an influential role in cancer organizations in both Europe and the United States and helped to develop new chemotherapies and strategies for anticancer treatment, including the use of targeted agents that work specifically on cancer cells.
Education and Career
Dr. Giaccone earned his medical degree cum laude at the University Torino Medical School in Torino, Italy. He completed his internship at the Institute of Oncology in Torino and his residency at the University Medical School in Torino. Upon completion of his training in clinical oncology and internal medicine, he spent two years at the National Cancer Institute, working in the Medical Oncology Branch under the direction of Dr. John Minna, then completed his Ph.D. at Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
He remained at the Vrije University Medical Center as senior medical oncologist, Professor of Medical Oncology, and then Head of the Center’s Department of Medical Oncology and played a major role in the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) as a member of its Lung Cancer Cooperative Group and as its Chair.
Dr. Giaccone was appointed Chief of the Medical Oncology Branch of the Center for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute in 2007. During his tenure, he helped restructure the intramural medical oncology and clinical trial organization and developed cutting-edge clinical, basic, and translational research in the field of thoracic malignancies.
He served as Associate Director for Clinical Research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and Director of Clinical Research for the affiliated MedStar Health Cancer Network’s Washington region from 2013 to 2019, when he joined Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital as Chief of Thoracic Oncology and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center.
Dr. Giaccone focuses his research on studying the biology of lung cancer and thymic tumors, as well as on treating those malignancies. His previous work has led to new ways to treat and diagnose malignant pleural mesothelioma. He also serves on the editorial boards of many medical and scientific journals, including Clinical Cancer Research, Frontiers in Oncology, Annals of Oncology, and Investigational New Drugs, and has personally published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers and contributed to more than 30 book chapters.
