Kamran Idrees, MD, MSCI, MMHC, FACS
Dr. Kamran Idrees is a surgical oncologist, Associate Professor of Surgery, and Director of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Vanderbilt Health. His primary interests are treating peritoneal surface malignancies like malignant pleural mesothelioma, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic tumors, liver tumors (primary and metastatic), gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, retroperitoneal sarcomas, and gastro-intestinal stromal tumors.[1]
Dr. Kamran uses minimally invasive surgical techniques (laparoscopic and robotic) to treat these conditions and has significant expertise in the use of cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. In developing Vanderbilt’s Peritoneal Surface Malignancy program/HIPEC and isolated limb infusion programs, he has instituted a multidisciplinary approach that involves coordination of care with medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and ancillary services from the first evaluation through diagnosis, staging, and treatment.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Idrees earned his medical degree at the Agha Khan University Medical College in Pakistan, then completed a Surgical Oncology research fellowship in colorectal cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He then completed a General Surgery internship and residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham followed by a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he was trained in regional perfusion treatments and isolated limb infusion. From there he went on to Washington University in St. Louis, where he completed a Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery fellowship.[1]
Dr. Idrees was recruited to lead and expand Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center’s Peritoneal Surface Malignancy program/HIPEC and isolated limb infusion program at Vanderbilt. While there he has also pursued and completed his Master of Science in Clinical Investigation at Vanderbilt University and his Master of Management in Health Care at Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management.[1]
