Kemp Kernstine, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Kemp Kernstine is a thoracic surgeon specializing in the management of a wide spectrum of benign and malignant diseases of the chest, including lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He practices at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he is Professor and Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and holds the Robert Tucker Hayes Foundation Distinguished Chair in Cardiothoracic Surgery.[1]
Dr. Kernstine’s expertise in conditions involving the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall is supported by his skill in the use of robotic surgery.
Education and Career
Dr. Kernstine completed his undergraduate and medical studies at Duke University, after which he completed an internship and General Surgery residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While there, he also completed his Ph.D. He completed further training in Heart and Lung Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School as a General Thoracic track resident. He is board-certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery.[1]

Research
Dr. Kernstine is the recipient of funding from the National Cancer Institute, as well as a variety of regional and national grants to further his research interests, which include minimally invasive and robotic surgery procedures and the surgical evaluation and treatment of lung and esophageal cancer, mesothelioma, and thymic cancers. He is also interested in the treatment of benign esophageal disease and thymectomy in the treatment of myasthenia gravis.[1]
