Lawrence E. Harrison, MD
Dr. Lawrence E. Harrison is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist who serves as chief of Atlantic Surgical Oncology at the Atlantic Health System in Morristown and Summit, New Jersey. Dr Harrison is one of the most experienced surgical oncologists in the state and has extensive training in novel surgical techniques including hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) which is used to treat malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
HIPEC involves delivering a heated, highly concentrated solution of chemotherapy drugs directly into a surgical site following surgery to remove as much cancerous material as possible. Dr. Harrison is also an expert in robotic surgery and is involved in research and the teaching of medical residents and students.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Harrison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry at Franklin & Marshall College and his medical degree at Temple University Medical School. He completed his General Surgical internship and residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and then completed both research and clinical fellowships in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.[2]
Following completion of his medical education and training, Dr. Harrison spent several years with the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, rising to the position of Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology, He then assumed the responsibility of Director of Surgical Oncology at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey and director of the Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgical Fellowship before accepting his current role at Atlantic Health System.[1]
Professional Activities and Memberships
Dr. Harrison is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, as well as other professional societies.[2]
