Michael Shafique, MD
Dr. Michael Shafique is a thoracic oncologist at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He specializes in treating patients with lung cancers, malignant pleural mesothelioma, neuroendocrine tumors, Pancoast tumors, and thymomas, as well as gynecologic malignancies.[1]
Dr. Shafique is actively involved in recruiting patients into early-phase clinical trials, particularly those that leverage innovative immunotherapy treatments. His clinical interest revolves around how best to use those protocols to improve patient outcomes and quality of life, particularly in creating personalized treatment plans for patients with rare targetable mutations.
Education and Career
Dr. Shafique earned his undergraduate degree in Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then attended medical school at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and after earning his medical degree went on to complete an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Shafique completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of South Florida before accepting the position of Assistant Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center.[1]
Research
Dr. Shafique’s research focuses on using the best possible information about a patient’s specific disease in order to apply the most effective treatment. He is leading protocols and clinical trials that would see the evaluation of molecular subtypes of patients’ cancers in advance, at first diagnosis, and having them ready and matched to a clinical trial later on, either as an add-on or for a trial in a second-line setting or subsequent lines of therapy. To that end, much of his clinical research is focused on molecular subtypes, next-generation sequencing, and RNA sequencing.[2]
