Wilbur Bowne, MD, FACS
Dr. Wilbur B. Bowne is a surgical oncologist at Jefferson Health and Thomas Jefferson University’s Sidney Kimmel Medical School. He specializes in pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) surgery and cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in the treatment of peritoneal cancers like malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. He also performs hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery and surgeries for pancreatic and biliary cancers.[1]
Dr. Bowne works as part of a multidisciplinary cancer team and believes in using evidence-based data to support the surgical approaches that he uses. He is also spearheading efforts to raise awareness about PMP to give more patients a chance for survival.
Education and Career
Dr. Bowne earned his medical degree at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University College of Medicine and then completed an internship at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine. He completed surgical residencies at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, and fellowships at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and City University of New York.[1]
Research
Dr. Bowne received The American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Young Investigator and The American College of Surgeons Faculty Fellowship Research Awards for his research in pancreatic cancer. Since then, he has focused on developing novel anti-cancer targeted therapies against oncoprotein and cell cycle regulation in pancreatic cancer. He is extensively published with over 150 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, and book chapters.[2]
