Mohamed Shanshal, M.B., B.Ch., M.D.
Dr. Mohamed Shanshal is a hematologist and medical oncologist at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He specializes in treating patients with thoracic malignancies, including pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer. He is also a researcher developing targeted therapies, bio-specific T-cell engagers, and nano-oncology treatments to improve outcomes for patients with hard-to-treat cancers.
Education and Career
Dr. Shanshal earned his undergraduate medical degree in Medicine at Al-Nahrain University, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science at the Chicago Medical School.
He then moved on to a chief fellowship at Texas Tech University and a subspecialty fellowship in Oncology as part of the Advanced Programs of the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Dr. Shanshal stayed at the Mayo Clinic to become part of the Lung Cancer specialty program, one of the nation’s largest and most experienced clinical programs for treatment of the disease.
Dr. Shanshal is now a medical oncologist at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tennessee.[1] There, he is a clinical lead in thoracic oncology trials, translational cancer, and drug development.[2]
Dr. Shanshal specializes in treating thoracic cancers, including lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, and rare thymic cancers. He uses a combination of therapies, including immunotherapy, nanoparticles, and robotic brochoscopy, to provide individualized treatment plans.
He is also a researcher, developing new targeted therapies and working on advanced treatment modalities, like nanoparticles, to translate these findings into real treatments and better outcomes for patients.

Dr. Shanshal holds certifications in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology.
