Erik Lewis, MD
Dr. Erik Lewis is a thoracic surgeon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He treats a variety of thoracic conditions, including lung cancer and esophageal cancer. He also treats patients diagnosed with benign conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux. He is skilled in minimally invasive surgical procedures and performs lung transplants.[]
Education and Career
Dr. Lewis attended Middlebury College as an undergraduate, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He earned his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, then moved on to complete an internship and residency in General Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai/Morningside/West.
Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics. He is board-certified in Surgery and Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.[1]
Dr. Lewis is now a thoracic surgeon with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He sees patients at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and Village Pointe Health Center. He specializes in treating lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal and chest wall tumors, and benign chest and esophageal conditions.
Dr. Lewis also specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including those for diagnosing lung lesions, lung transplantation, and treatments for end-stage lung diseases.
Dr. Lewis has been fascinated by cardiothoracic surgery since his days as an undergraduate when he shadowed a general surgeon as part of an externship. He continues to be driven by what he saw then, particularly the rewards of guiding patients through difficult situations. He believes that listening to his patients and understanding their concerns is an important part of his role and that doing so allows him to better explain the nuances of their treatment options.
