Brendon M. Stiles, MD
Dr. Brendon M. Stiles is a thoracic surgeon who specializes in treating lung and esophageal cancers and unusual and rare thoracic cancers, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He is the Chief of Thoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology at Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Associate Director of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Stiles is also skilled in treating benign chest and upper gastrointestinal diseases and metastatic tumors that invade the heart.
Dr. Stiles is a strong believer that the patient should always come first. To that end, he uses minimally invasive, organ-sparing techniques and targeted surgical therapies whenever possible in keeping with the patient’s goals.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Stiles earned his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, then remained there to earn his medical degree at the University of Virginia Medical School. His initial General Surgery residency was completed at the University of Virginia Health System and was followed by a Surgical Research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Stiles also completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He served as a faculty member at New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell before joining Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Research
Dr. Stiles has a robust interest in both clinical and translational research surrounding lung cancer and the management of its early stages. He is actively working to identify multidisciplinary treatment strategies for its treatment. He is currently investigating the ART1 protein’s role in protecting cancer cells from the body’s immune system and has developed a novel drug to target this ability. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, is frequently invited to speak at national international medical gatherings on the subject of the clinical management of lung and esophageal cancer, and has co-authored numerous manuscripts on lung cancer, including guidelines for its management, a study on the use of neoadjuvant immunotherapy, and a review on lung cancer’s microenvironment.[1]
Professional and Philanthropic Activities
Dr. Stiles is a member of several professional medical organizations, including:

- The Society of Thoracic Surgeons
- The American Society of Clinical Oncology,
- The European Society of Thoracic Surgeons
- The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer
He is also actively involved in raising money for lung cancer research and serves as chair of the Lung Cancer Research Foundation.
Dr. Stiles also is an invited member of the National Lung Cancer Roundtable and sits on the American College of Radiology’s Lung-RADS Steering Committee for lung cancer screening.[1]
