John Ammori, MD
Dr. John Ammori is a surgical oncologist, Associate Professor of Surgery, and the Program Director of Case Western Reserve University’s/UH Cleveland Medical Center’s General Surgery Residency. In his role there, he specializes in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a complex combination procedure that combines surgical removal of all evident tumors with the administration of a heated solution of chemotherapy medication. It has proven to be extremely helpful for patients with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, who have experienced extended survival and improved quality of life following the procedure.[1]
Dr. Ammori is also skilled in surgeries for the treatment of gallbladder and bile duct cancer, gastrointestinal cancers hepatobiliary disease, liver cancers, metastatic colon cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, sarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and upper gastrointestinal cancers.
Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC at Seidman Cancer Center
Dr. Ammori is part of a multidisciplinary team at Seidman Cancer Center that deploys cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for the treatment of peritoneal cancers, including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. They have found that CRS HIPEC offers numerous benefits for patients whose disease has not responded to standard chemotherapy, in large part because a greater concentration of the drug can be applied directly to the malignant cells. This approach provides enhanced tissue penetration with fewer side effects, shorter hospital stays, and improved quality of life.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. Ammori earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and remained at that campus to pursue his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School. He then completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center/University of Michigan Health System, as well as a research fellowship and fellowship in General Surgery at the same location. Dr. Ammori completed his medical education with a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before joining the University Hospitals and Seidman Cancer Center.[1]
In addition to his role as surgical oncologist and Associate Professor, Dr. Ammori is the Program Director for the University Hospitals’ General Surgery Residency. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
