Philip Linden, MD
Dr. Philip Linden is the Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at University Hospitals and UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as an associate professor of surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His clinical interests are thoracic cancers of all kinds, including lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma, and he is skilled in ablative therapies and minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgeries, including extrapleural pneumonectomy and pleurectomy with decortication.
Dr. Linden is also a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Developmental Therapeutics Program.
Education and Career
Dr. Linden earned his bachelor’s degree at Williams College in Massachusetts, followed by earning his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, then spent two years as a research fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He completed his Thoracic Surgery training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School.
After completing his medical training, he was hired as a staff surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. After assuming his role at University Hospitals, he helped create the Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery, which now includes six thoracic surgeons and is consistently ranked among the top ten percent of programs in the country.
Research
Dr. Linden is a member of the Developmental Therapeutics Program at Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. The focus of his research is lung malignancies and the best methods of diagnosing and treating them. He currently has a $500,000 DOD grant for investigating the use of CT Textural Analysis to define which cancers are invasive and require treatment and which are not and can be observed.
Additionally, he is working on clinical trials investigating esophageal surgery, early diagnosis and management of perioperative complications following esophageal cancer surgery, and the effectiveness and safety of navigation bronchoscopy in diagnosing lung cancers.
The recipient of the Society of Thoracic Surgery’s Richard Clark Award for outstanding research, Dr. Linden has authored numerous publications and presented his findings at both national and international conferences.
