Paul H. Schipper, MD, FACS, FACCP
Dr. Paul H. Schipper is a cardiothoracic and thoracic surgeon with OHSU Health and a member of the lung cancer team at the Knight Cancer Institute. He specializes in chest and lung surgery, with a special focus on esophageal cancer, lung cancer, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, thymoma, and thymic malignancies. He pioneered the use of thoracoscopic lobectomy, which allows physicians to insert a thin tube equipped with a camera into the chest rather than opening the ribs to remove tumors.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Schipper earned a bachelor of arts degree at Augustana College, then followed his undergraduate education by earning a medical degree at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at New York University and a fellowship in General Thoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.[1]
In addition to his practice, Dr. Schipper is a professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the OHSU School of Medicine.

Research
Dr. Schipper’s research interests are focused on epidemiology, risk assessments for surgical resections, and surgeries to remove lymph nodes to check for cancer. He has also researched other procedures used to treat lung cancer.
