Travis Osterman, DO, MS
Dr. Travis Osterman is a medical oncologist at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His clinical interests are focused on lung cancer, thymic malignancies, and malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Osterman is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Clinical Informatics.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Osterman earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana, and then earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. After joining Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he also earned a Master of Science degree in biomedical informatics at Vanderbilt University.
As a medical oncologist, Dr. Osterman’s clinical practice focuses on lung cancer screening and treatment, as well as the treatment of other thoracic malignancies. He is a leader in the integration of AI and machine learning into oncology.
Dr. Osterman fills multiple roles at Vanderbilt Health, including:[1]

- Associate Professor of Medicine
- Director of Cancer Clinical Informatics
- Associate Chief Medical Information Officer
In addition to providing high-quality, compassionate patient care, Dr. Osterman leads the Clinical Cancer Informatics Innovation group at Vanderbilt, which is developing tools for both research and to directly support patient care and treatment.
Dr. Osterman is actively involved in national efforts to improve the availability of oncology-specific EHR data to support quality improvement across oncology practices, serving on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Electronic Health Record (EHR) workgroup and Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) workgroup, both of which leverage EHR to promote innovation and to standardize best practices across cancer centers.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Osterman serves on the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) CancerLinQ Physician Advisory Board, the Minimum Common Oncology Data Elements (mCODE) workgroup, and the Member and Meeting Publications Editorial Board.
He also represents VUMC as a founding member of the Oncology Clinical Trial Information Commons (OCTIC) project, which focuses on standardizing how data describing clinical trials are stored. He also serves on the Epic Adult Oncology Steering Board and chairs Epic’s Beacon Community Operations Group.[1]
