Sally York, MD, PhD
Dr. Sally York is a medical oncologist and research scientist whose primary clinical focus is on treating patients with lung cancer, thymic cancers, mesothelioma, and other thoracic malignancies. She practices at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Institute, where she is an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She is also the Associate Director for Clinical Education of the Medical Scientist Training Program.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. York earned her medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis, completing that education at the same time as her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She then spent the next several years at Duke University Hospital, where she first completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine, served as Assistant Chief Resident, and then completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology.[1]
Following the completion of her medical education and training, she practiced medicine at Duke University Hospital, taking on a leadership role in its Medical Scientist Training Program while treating patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other thoracic malignancies.[] She joined the oncology program at Vanderbilt in 2012.[2]
Research
Dr. York has accumulated an impressive body of research focused on lung cancer, thoracic malignancies, and the role that genetics and chemotherapy-induced DNA damage have in improving outcomes for patients. In addition to participating in clinical trials at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Institue, she serves as the Associate Director for Clinical Education of Vanderbilt’s Medical Scientist Training Program, a combined clinical and research training that trains physician-scientists.
