Sameera Kumar, MD
Dr. Sameera Kumar is a radiation oncologist and assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She specializes in using innovative radiation therapy tools to treat thoracic malignancies including lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, thymoma, and esophageal cancer.[1]
Dr. Kumar works as part of a multidisciplinary care team at Fox Chase, collaborating with physicians from the departments of surgery, medical oncology, diagnostic imaging, and pathology as well as other cancer care specialists including nurses, nurse navigators, genetic counselors, social workers, physical therapists, and hospital pharmacists. She believes that working together in this way is the key to creating the most successful treatment plan and providing patients with the best possible outcome to match their condition and their goals.[1]
Education and Career
After earning her medical degree at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia, Dr. Kumar completed her internship and residency in radiation oncology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. She was named Chief Resident during her final years there and began pursuit of her Ph.D. in Clinical and Translational Science. She was recruited to join the Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Department of Radiation Oncology immediately upon completion of her residency. Dr. Kumar is board-certified in Radiation Oncology.[1]
Research
Dr. Kumar’s primary research interests include the management of ultra-central early-stage non-small cell lung cancer tumors and the application of hypofractionation to thoracic malignancies.
