Perry Shen, MD
Perry Shen, MD is a surgical oncologist at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Comprehensive Cancer Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a Professor of Surgery and surgeon who specializes in oncological problems involving the liver, the pancreas, the bowel duct, and gallbladder, as well as gastrointestinal malignancies involving peritoneal surface tumors like malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1] He is one of the few surgeons in the country who is skilled in the use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy following cytoreductive surgery. This complex surgery has proven to be one of the most innovative and effective treatments for this rare and challenging diagnosis.
Education and Career
Dr. Shen earned his medical degree at Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He then attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for his internship and the University of Southern California Los Angeles County and USC Medical Center for his residency in General Surgery. Dr. Shen then completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. He is board-certified in Surgery.[1]

Research
Dr. Shen is currently studying the use of a hepatic pump to deliver chemotherapy directly to the liver. He is testing a technique called microwave ablation for use in patients with inoperable liver tumors. He is also involved in several breast cancer clinical trials and is the principal investigator for a study on predicting the risk of melanoma spreading to nearby organs.[2]
He is currently involved in a clinical trial titled Learning More About the Benefits of Chemotherapy Before and After Surgery for Gallbladder Cancer.
