Craig Stevens, MD, PhD
Dr. Craig Stevens is a radiation oncologist specializing in treating patients with lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma at Beaumont Health in Royal Oaks, Michigan (now known as Corewell Health). He holds the title of System Chair of Radiation Oncology for Beaumont Health, as well as Department Chair and Professor of Radiation Oncology at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.[1]
Dr. Stevens is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in the use of innovative radiation technology to treat thoracic malignancies.
Education and Career
Dr. Stevens pursued his undergraduate degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in biology. He earned both a medical degree and a PhD in tumor cell biology from Northwestern University in Chicago, then went on to complete an internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Radiation Oncology at Georgetown University.[1]
Following completion of his training, Dr. Stevens served as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, then joined the faculty at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. In 2005, he became the chair of radiation oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. He accepted his role at Beaumont Health in 2013.

Research
Dr. Stevens is internationally recognized for his research in the areas of lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and other chest malignancies, as well as radiation physics and radiobiology. While on the faculty at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, his research efforts expanded from having previously developed a test to predict radiation response in tumor and normal cells to include DNA repair and radiation inducible recombination. He also developed a physics research program that examined the use of PET-CT in lung cancer planning and on accounting for breathing-induced tumor motion, and a program to use IMRT for potentially curative treatment of mesothelioma.
He continues to be actively involved in clinical research and is currently recruiting for and leading a clinical trial titled, “Evaluation Tracking Project: A Prospective Chart Review of Patients Treated With Radiation Therapy.”[2]
