Jack Elias, MD
Dr. Jack Elias is the senior vice president for health affairs at Brown University, where he cares for patients with a wide variety of lung ailments and conducts research on conditions including lung cancer, lung injuries, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He is also working to expand translational research and to train the next generation of physician-scientists.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Elias earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed an internship and junior residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center and a senior residency and fellowships in Allergy and Immunology and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.[1]
Following completion of his medical education and training, Dr. Elias became an Assistant Professor and then an Associate Professor in the Section of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He later accepted a role at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was named the Waldemar Von Zedtwitz Professor at Yale University and Chairman of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine and the Physician-in-Chief at Yale New Haven Hospital before joining Brown University.[1]
Dr. Elias has held many notable professional titles and responsibilities, including acting as a Councilor of the Association of American Physicians as well as its president. He has served on the Lung Biology and Pathology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, numerous advisory boards, and was an ad-hoc participant in the Council of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases. He was also selected to the Council of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.[1]

Research
Dr. Elias researches conditions including lung cancer and lung injuries, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma. His NIH-funded laboratory focuses on the cell and molecular biology of lung injury and repair, including a recent focus on the biology of chitinases and chitinase-like proteins and their role in pulmonary diseases. He and his colleagues have made great strides in the development of new drugs to treat these illnesses and injuries.[2]
