Chukwuemeka Obiora, MD
Dr. Chukwuemeka Obiora is a surgical oncologist who specializes in treating patients with gastrointestinal, abdominal, and peritoneal surface malignancies at the City of Hope in Atlanta, Georgia. He has clinical expertise in the use of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, an innovative and complex procedure that has significantly improved the quality of life and outcomes for patients diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
Dr. Obiora works with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate and treat a wide range of cancer types. He has extensive experience in general surgery and specialized expertise in hepatobiliary, pancreatic, upper (including esophageal), and lower gastrointestinal malignancies. His expertise includes treatment for cutaneous malignancies, sarcomas, thyroid and parathyroid tumors, and the use of minimally invasive and robotic surgery procedures.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Obiora earned a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his medical degree at Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit. He then completed an internship in General Surgery at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a residency in General Surgery at St. Luke’s University Health Network/Temple University St. Luke’s School of Medicine in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he served as chief resident in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.[1]
Following completion of his medical education and training, Dr. Obiora practiced at Sentara Healthcare in Newport News, Virginia and then joined New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center in Wilmington, North Carolina before joining City of Hope.
