James Stevenson, MD
Dr. James Stevenson is a medical oncologist and Vice-Chairman of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Department of the Taussig Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He has been a thoracic medical oncologist and clinical investigator for over 20 years and an active participant in collaborative efforts to advance treatment options for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma and their families.[1]
In addition to helping manage and coordinate disease-specific programs within the department, Dr. Stevenson specializes in carcinoid tumors of the lungs, lung cancer, malignant pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, rare cancer and blood diseases, thymic cancer, thymic tumors, and thymoma. He leads the Multi-Disciplinary Pleural Mesothelioma Program at the Cleveland Clinic.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Stevenson received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame, in Notre Dame, Indiana. He is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida Hospitals. He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.[1]
In addition to his medical practice and leadership role at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Stevenson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, and a member of the Developmental Therapeutics Program at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center of Case Western Reserve University. He is also a member of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Scientific Advisory Board and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Guidelines Panel.[2]
Research
Dr. Stevenson’s areas of clinical and research interest include the treatment of thoracic malignancies, with a focus on lung cancers and malignant mesothelioma. Some of his recent work has investigated standard-of-care treatment for ES-SCLC, involving the introduction of novel approaches including consolidation radiotherapy to the thorax and other sites of oligometastatic disease following initial chemoimmunotherapy, just as maintenance immunotherapy is initiated.
