Steve Sung Kwon, MD, MPH, MBA, FACS
Dr. Steve Sung Kwon is a surgical oncologist and expert in complex general surgical oncology for gastrointestinal malignancies. He practices at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island, where his practice includes performing cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for patients diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Kwon treats patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancers, liver cancers, bile duct cancers, gastric cancers, endocrine tumors, melanoma, and sarcoma. He also analyzes healthcare data using large databases in an attempt to discover innovative solutions to help people gain access to care.
Education and Career
Dr. Kwon attended the University of Illinois as an undergraduate, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree as part of the Guaranteed Professional Program Admission Initiative in Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center and also earned a master’s degree in public health and epidemiology from the University of Washington School of Public Health while he was there. Dr. Kwon also holds a global health certificate from the University of Washington Department of Global Health. He completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.[1]
After completing his medical education and training, he accepted a role as a surgical oncologist at Holy Name Medical Center in New Jersey. Before joining Roger Williams Medical Center, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of Business.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Kwon is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and the Korean-American Medical Association. He is involved with the Stomach Cancer Disparity Task Force and allocates time toward mentoring students at Washington Heights.[1]
Research
Dr. Kwon is engaged in clinical research to investigate the use of quality improvement metrics among surgical patients to improve quality of care and cancer outcomes. He is widely published on surgical oncology topics and has presented his research at academic assemblies throughout the U.S.[1]
