Mio Kitano, MD, MS
Dr. Mio Kitano is a surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at UT Health San Antonio in Texas. She specializes in the surgical management of gastrointestinal tumors and malignancies, including those of the stomach, small bowel, colon, and pancreas.[1]
Dr. Kitano is experienced in the application of a compound surgical procedure that combines cytoreductive surgery with the administration of heated chemotherapy solution directly into the surgical site, where it remains for 90 minutes to kill any cancer cells left behind. The procedure, known as CRS-HIPEC has proven to be extremely effective in prolonging the survival of patients diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma while avoiding the adverse effects traditionally associated with systemic chemotherapy.
Education and Career
Dr. Kitano earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Biochemistry and Psychology from Manhattan College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She earned her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine, where she graduated cum laude, and then completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University. After completing a clinical fellowship in Immunotherapy and another in Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, she completed another residency in General Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Following this training, she completed a clinical fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at The Ohio State University’s Department of Surgery at the Wexner Medical Center: She simultaneously earned a Master of Medical Science at the Ohio State University.[1]
Research
Dr. Kitano completed a three-year clinical research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and continues to explore modifications in surgical approaches and their potential for improving patient outcomes. She has authored two book chapters and been a co-author on numerous publications that have been published in respected medical journals including the American Journal of Surgery, Journal of Gynecologic Oncology, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Journal of Clinical Medicine.[1]
