Charles Ray Mulligan, Jr., MD
Dr. Charles Mulligan is a thoracic surgeon and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center of the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware. His clinical interests include malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, and lung cancer.
Dr. Mulligan says that he loves being a doctor and being able to help thoracic oncology patients and being there for them through thick and thin. He is deeply gratified that the interventions that he provides enable them to live better lives.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Mulligan’s educational journey began at the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduation, he completed the Engineer Officer Basic Course at Ft Belvoir in Virginia, then served as a combat engineer officer with the 24th Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He asked the Army to allow him to attend medical school and was accepted by the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed General Surgery training at Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and then practiced as a general surgeon at McDonald Army Community Hospital at Ft. Eustis, Virginia.[1]
He was selected for a civilian Thoracic Surgery residency, which he completed at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was assigned to Walter Reed Army Medical Center as a staff cardiothoracic surgeon. He was named chief of the Thoracic Surgery Section and chairman of the Thoracic Tumor Board.[1]
Dr. Mulligan served as Chief of Thoracic Surgery with the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq from 2003-2004 and as Chief of General and Thoracic Surgery in Iraq from 2006-2007. He then returned to Walter Reed and continued practicing there until he retired from active duty.[1]
Following his departure from the Army, Dr. Mulligan became a member of the Thoracic Surgery Service at Christiana Care’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, He was recruited to build the Thoracic Surgical Oncology Service at Centra Health and Pearson Cancer Center in Lynchburg, Virginia. When that facility was completed, he returned to Christiana Care as the Chief of Thoracic Surgery.[1]

Dr. Mulligan is a member of several professional medical societies, including the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
