Deepa Magge, MD
Dr. Deepa Magge is a surgical oncologist whose specific areas of interest include gastrointestinal (GI) surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal carcinomatosis including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. She is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.[1]
Dr. Magge is well-versed in minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, to treat most benign and malignant conditions. She is board-certified in General Surgery as well as Complex General Surgical Oncology.
Education and Career
Dr. Magge earned her bachelor’s degree with summa cum laude distinction and her medical degree with cum laude and AOA designation from Boston University, where she was part of a special, seven-year medical program. She completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) where she served as Administrative Chief Resident, then remained at UPMC to complete a fellowship in Complex Surgical Oncology, during which she again served as Administrative Chief Fellow.[1]
Following the completion of her fellowship training, Dr. Magge was an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. She served as the Associate Program Director of the CGSO fellowship and focused much of her time there on teaching residents and fellows.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Magge serves as a committee member for the Advanced Cancer Therapies Conference offered by the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Working Group for the Society of Surgical Oncology. She is also a member of the American College of Surgeons.[1]
Research
During her residency, Dr. Magge completed numerous clinical research studies, starting with two years of basic science and translational research focusing on oncolytic viral therapy modulation. Since then, she has investigated regional therapies including Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for carcinomatosis secondary to multiple GI malignancies, as well as Isolated Hepatic Perfusion for unresectable liver metastases.[1]
Dr. Magge has over 20 first or last-author publications and has been a collaborating author on many other publications that have appeared in peer-reviewed scientific and clinical journals. She has also presented her research findings nationally. Her recent publications include:[2]
