Hirva Mamdani, MD
Dr. Hirva Mamdani is a thoracic medical oncologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, and other thoracic malignancies. She is the head of the Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit and is the Director of Lung Cancer Screening there.
She is always mindful of the fact that “scientifically, culturally, physically, and mentally, every patient with cancer is different, so treatment has to be individualized for that particular patient.” She is glad to be able to offer patients state-of-the-art treatment and to conduct clinical research aimed at improving patient outcomes.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Mamdani received her medical degree from M.P. Shah Medical College in India. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit and her fellowship training in Hematology and Oncology at Indiana University in Indianapolis.
She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hematology. In addition to leading the Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, she is also a member of its Phase I Clinical-Pharmacology Program and director of the Lung Cancer Screening Program. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association for Cancer Research, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Mamdani is a frequent presenter at professional conferences including the ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium and the ASCO Annual Meeting.[1]
Research
Dr. Mamdani’s research interests center on the development of treatment strategies for lung cancer, and especially for overcoming cancer’s resistance to immunotherapy. She is a member of Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Phase 1 Clinical Trials Program’s multidisciplinary team and is the co-principal investigator of a study funded by the P20 Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) that is evaluating racial disparities in efficacy and toxicity of immunotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. She has received several young investigator awards and serves on the American Society of Clinical Oncology Expert Panel for developing treatment guidelines for advanced non-small cell lung cancer.
