James E. Spellman Jr., MD
Dr. James E. Spellman Jr. is a surgeon and surgical oncologist at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Delaware. He specializes in advanced surgical treatment for cancer, including the use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in combination with cytoreductive surgery as a treatment for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma and other advanced cancers.[1]
Over nearly three decades at Beebe, Dr. Spellman helped to build the facility’s surgical oncology offerings, allowing patients in southern Delaware to avoid having to travel for advanced treatments. Among the services that he introduced were Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, Stereotactic Biopsy, and Sentinel Node Biopsy. He has also spearheaded numerous accreditations for Beebe programs.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Spellman attended West Chester State University in Pennsylvania for his undergraduate education, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology. He earned his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University Medical College, completed his internship and residency at Stamford Hospital, and a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the Pritzker School of Medicine of the University of Chicago.[1]
After completing his medical education and training, Dr. Spellman was a member of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Spellman is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of the Society of Surgical Oncology. He has also served as the Delaware State Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) Cancer Liaison and is a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the Delaware Cancer Consortium.[1]
Research
Dr. Spellman’s interest in advanced surgical treatment for cancer led to him investigating the role of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for numerous applications. Notably, he was one of 16 authors of an article titled “Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy in Ovarian Cancer” that appeared in the January 2010 issue of the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer that reported on the effectiveness of the therapy.[2]
