Dr. Jess Schwartz is a thoracic surgeon with extensive specialty training in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic and video-assisted thoracic surgery. He deploys these skills at the Stephenson Cancer Center * Oklahoma University Health in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, caring for patients with thoracic malignancies, specializing in treating patients with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal malignancies including thymoma, chest wall tumors, and pleural malignancies.
Dr. Schwartz’s expertise includes Da Vinci robotic thoracic surgery, minimally invasive thoracic surgery/video-assisted thoracic surgery, thymectomy, and myotomy. His dedication to a patient-centered approach is apparent in the care with which he approaches each patient.
Education and Career
Dr. Schwartz earned a bachelor of arts degree from Washington University before attending the New York University School of Medicine. After earning his medical degree, he remained at NYU, completing a General Surgery Residency, a Cardiothoracic Research Fellowship, and a Cardiothoracic Residency. From there he moved on to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to complete a Thoracic Transplantation Fellowship and then on to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to complete a Thoracic Transplantation fellowship.
After completing his education, Dr. Schwartz accepted a role as Associate Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center and rose to the position of Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. While there he performed the state’s first successful robot-assisted lobectomy for lung cancer. He now serves as a member of the Cardiac, Thoracic & Vascular Surgery Faculty at The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Stephenson Cancer Center.
Dr. Schwartz’s research is focused on identifying innovative surgical techniques leading to improved patient outcomes. His recent publications include:
