Joshua R. Sonett, MD, FACS
Dr. Joshua R. Sonett is a thoracic surgeon and oncologist at Columbia Surgery at New York-Presbyterian in New York. He is the Chief of the Thoracic Surgery Section and the Director of the Price Family Center for Comprehensive Chest Care, Lung and Esophageal Center. Dr. Sonett is credited with having made the Thoracic Surgery section at Columbia University Medical Center one of the best in the country. He has earned a reputation for his multidisciplinary treatment of lung and esophageal malignancies, as well as pleural mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Sonett is a leader in minimally invasive treatment of thoracic malignancies. He and his team have created new techniques for the use of Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery and incorporate these protocols into combination therapies with chemotherapy and radiation. He is also a leader in multi-modality therapies for lung and esophageal cancers and a pioneer in endo-bronchial palliation of benign and malignant airway stenosis.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Sonett received his medical degree from the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University Medical School. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Massachusetts and his Thoracic Surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.[1]

Research
In addition to patient care, Dr. Sonett is an active researcher. In addition to clinical trials designed to improve outcomes of multi-modality treatment, he and his team have worked to alleviate the shortage of organs for donation by developing extended donor criteria for organ donations that has proven extremely successful, with a 95% survival rate after one year and 83% after three years.[1] He has been an invited speaker principal and co-investigator of numerous clinical trials and the author of more than 100 publications in renowned journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplant.
