Justin F. Gainor, MD
Dr. Justin F. Gainor is a medical oncologist specializing in thoracic malignancies at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In addition to his roles as Director of the Center for Thoracic Cancers and Director of Targeted Immunotherapy in the Henri and Belinda Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies, he is also an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.[1]
Dr. Gainor’s practice is focused on patients diagnosed with lung cancer and other challenging thoracic malignancies including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He is also engaged in early-phase clinical trials focused on the development of novel targeted therapies and immunotherapies.
Education and Career
Dr. Gainor attended Johns Hopkins University before earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He then completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in Medical Oncology in the combined program offered by Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Gainor is a member of the ESMO Translational Research and Precision Medicine Working Group and a co-leader at the American Association for Cancer Research, as well as a member of the American Society for Clinical Oncology.
Research
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Gainor is a physician investigator at the Mass General Cancer Center and Research Institute. His research focuses on developing novel cancer immunotherapies and immunotherapy combinations. He is the principal investigator for a broad portfolio of first-in-human clinical trials exploring new immunotherapeutic agents. He is actively involved in translational research addressing problems at the intersection of the clinic and basic science laboratories, and his current work is focused on identifying predictive biomarkers of response and resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors. He is currently co-leading the American Cancer Society-SU2C Lung Cancer Dream Team, a group whose mission is to identify molecular mechanisms of resistance to cancer immunotherapy.[2]
