Kevin K. Roggin, MD, FACS, FSSO
Dr. Kevin Roggin is the Division Chief of Surgical Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston. He is known as an innovator and expert in robotic surgery and helped enhance and expand the facility’s cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) program, which is particularly effective for the treatment of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Roggin is credited with introducing robotic approaches to many complex surgical oncology procedures and helped develop a multidisciplinary program for the management of CDH1 gene mutation carriers. He has performed over 25 minimally invasive risk-reducing total gastrectomy operations over the last four years.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. Roggin completed his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, earning a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in Political Science. He earned his medical degree at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He completed a residency in Surgery and a Research fellowship at Brown University. Then he completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.[1]
Dr. Roggin was a surgical educator at the University of Chicago Medicine, earning the title of Master Educator in the Academy of Medical Educators at the Pritzker School of Medicine, and for 12 of those years, he was the General Surgery Program Director. He has received the Gold Humanism Honors Society award, the Senior Distinguished Educator Award from the University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division, and the Program Director of the Year award from the University of Chicago Medicine.[2]
