Rian M. Hasson, MD, MPH, FACS
Dr. Rian M. Hasson is a thoracic surgeon at the Dartmouth Cancer Center and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She works as part of a multidisciplinary team to treat patients diagnosed with a range of thoracic cancers and benign diseases, including lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, and chest wall malignancies.[1]
Dr. Hasson’s areas of focus and skills include minimally invasive surgery, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and robotic surgery; advanced bronchoscopy and endoscopy; chest wall tumors, lung masses, and tracheal tumors; chest wall diseases, lung diseases including pulmonary fibrosis and COPD; and pleural disease.
Education and Career
Dr. Hasson earned a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, then completed her medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. As the recipient of the Ruth L. Kirschstein Training Grant, she spent two years as a clinical research fellow with Dr. Moimca Bertagnolli in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, studying the role of estrogen in inhibiting intestinal tumor formation. She also examined the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on tumor resistance and gastrointestinal tumor biology to develop more effective, patient-specific cancer prevention and treatment strategies.[2]
Dr. Hasson also completed a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center and a Thoracic Surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She also earned a Master of Public Health Degree at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice while serving as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Assistant Professor of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice, and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.[1]
Research
Dr. Hasson is an active health services researcher focusing on identifying and ameliorating disparities in lung cancer screening. She is also involved in research investigating clinical problems that arise during the perioperative care of thoracic and foregut patients, the utility of various neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment protocols for oncologic patients through clinical trials, and oncologic patient optimization through exercise training and nutrition improvements to improve outcomes and survival.[2]
