Rod L. Flynn, MD, FACS
Dr. Rod L. Flynn is a board-certified surgical oncologist who specializes in treating patients with abdominal and peritoneal cancers, including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. He practices at Mary Washington Healthcare in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he uses hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) combined with cytoreductive surgery, a procedure that he pioneered. The technique removes all visible malignant tumors and then bathes them in a heated solution of chemotherapy drugs to allow for maximal exposure to the medication’s effect while avoiding the adverse systemic effects traditionally associated with the protocol.[1]
Dr. Flynn also uses traditional and laparoscopic surgical procedures for intraabdominal malignancies, including cancers of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, small and large intestine, thyroid and adrenal glands, melanoma and other skin cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Flynn earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency in General Surgery at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then completed a Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.[1]
After serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Flynn spent six years as Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at Mary Washington Healthcare. He then returned to Philadelphia to establish and direct the HIPEC program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, then accepted the position of Medical Director of Surgical Oncology, HIPEC program at Christ Hospital Health Network in Cincinnati. Most recently, Dr. Flynn returned to Mary Washington Healthcare.[1]
Dr. Flynn was honored in 2023 to be inducted into the Global Directory of Who’s Who.[2]
