Sai Yendamuri, MD, MBA, FACS
Dr. Sai Yendamuri treats patients with lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, and other thoracic malignancies using minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Yendamuri says that the complexity of malignant mesothelioma requires a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes coordination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery that considers the needs of the individual patient.
Dr. Yendamuri’s clinical expertise includes video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and robotic surgery. He says that the use of minimally invasive surgery to treat this challenging condition allows patients to tolerate the procedure better and to recover far more quickly and with less pain.[1]
Dr. Yendamuri says the reason he chose medicine as a profession was because as a doctor he could have an immediate and lasting impact on the people around him. As the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, he is working to guide the department to provide even better outcomes for patients.
Education and Career
Dr. Yendamuri’s education began at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, India, where he earned his medical degree. He completed an internship at Presbyterian Medical Center of the University of Pennsylvania, then went on to pursue a surgical residency at Christiana Care Health Services in Delaware and a residency in Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Queens, New York. Dr. Yendamuri also completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center/University of Texas Medical Center at Houston, a fellowship in Philadelphia at the Harrison Department of Surgical Research, and a fellowship at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.[1]
Dr. Yendamori is board-certified in Surgery. His titles at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center include Chair of the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Professor of Oncology, Attending Surgeon in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, and Director of the Thoracic Surgery Laboratory.
Research
Dr. Yendamuri is actively engaged in clinical trials and has conducted extensive research focusing on molecular staging of thoracic malignancies, lung cancer screening, risk prediction using genomic markers, and global thoracic surgical training.[1]
The clinical trials he is currently involved with include:
- Photodynamic Therapy to Amplify the Response to Immunotherapy in Patients with Non-small Cell Lung Cancer with Pleural Disease
- Metformin for Chemoprevention of Lung Cancer in Overweight or Obese Individuals at High Risk for Lung Cancer
- Respiratory Muscle Training Before Surgery in Preventing Lung Complications in Patients with Stage I-IIIB Lung Cancer
Dr. Yendamuri has published book chapters and over 100 peer-reviewed articles in highly respected medical journals.
