Sherif R. Z. Abdel-Misih, MD
Dr. Sherif R.Z. Abdel-Misih is a surgical oncologist at Stony Brook Medicine and an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. He specializes in treating tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Education and Career
Dr. Abdel-Misih earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed a General Surgery internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic.
This was followed by fellowship training in Surgical Oncology at Ohio State University and Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital, where he remained as a physician, Associate Professor of Surgery in the department of Surgical Oncology, and Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program before taking on his role at Stony Brook Medicine.[1]
Dr. Abdel-Misih is currently a clinical professor of surgery at Renaissance School of Medicine. He is also the director of the general surgery residency.
Dr. Abdel-Misih specializes in surgical oncology with a focus on gastrointestinal cancers and other cancer tumor types, including peritoneal mesothelioma.
He has extensive surgical oncology training in the use of advanced techniques, including the novel procedure that combines cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). This procedure with HIPEC has been shown to significantly extend patient survival.
Dr. Abdel-Misih believes that the foundation of good treatment involves multi-disciplinary treatment strategies that include chemotherapy and radiation, as well as surgery.[1]
Dr. Abdel-Misih forges strong relationships with his patients to better understand their unique personal backgrounds while providing the comprehensive care that each one needs.

Dr. Abel-Misih’s scientific endeavors have been directed at clinical and translational research related to gastrointestinal malignancies, as well as didactic and skills-based scientific inquiry into surgical education and training.
