Shiven B. Patel, MD, MBA, FACP
Dr. Shiven B. Patel is a medical oncologist at the University of Utah Health and School of Medicine and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, both in Salt Lake City, Utah. He cares for veterans as an Associate Professor of Oncology at the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City. He works to provide access to quality cancer treatment and clinical trial participation.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Patel earned his bachelor’s degree and his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and then served as an attending physician in Hospitalist Medicine at MedStar Franklin Square in Rosedale, Maryland.
He then completed a combined fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Utah and the Huntsman Cancer Institute, serving as Chief Fellow during his final year of training.[1]
Since completing his medical education, Dr. Patel pursued further education, earning his MBA at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, as well as the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification through Professional Education at the University of Utah.
Dr. Patel is currently a medical oncologist at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and an associate professor in the University of Utah School of Medicine’s Division of Oncology.
He is also the Medical Director of Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Idaho. In this role, Dr. Patel works to improve access to cancer treatment and clinical trials through community outreach.[2]
Dr. Patel specializes in adult hematology and medical oncology. His main areas of interest are thoracic cancers, including lung cancer and pleural mesothelioma.

Dr. Patel is a member of several national organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Association of Cancer Research.

Dr. Patel’s research interests include lung cancer, hematology, pleural mesothelioma, thymoma, and thoracic oncology.
He has participated as the principal investigator or sub-investigator in several clinical trials and presented his findings at many national and international conferences, and his peer-reviewed articles have been published in numerous professional medical journals.
