West Cancer Center & Research Institute was founded by nationally respected oncologist and lead investigator for the National Institutes of Health William H. West, MD. Dr. West’s mission was to provide world-class cancer treatment and research capabilities in Memphis, Tennessee, and the surrounding area. Today, West Cancer Center is the region’s comprehensive leader in adult cancer care and research, offering cutting-edge treatment including care for patients diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other advanced cancers.[1]
The center’s commitment to translational research led to the enrollment of nearly 500 patients in clinical trials in 2022 and almost 900 cases being reviewed by the facility’s comprehensive tumor boards. Researchers focus on genomic/drug delivery, translational targeting, and identifying new clinical pathways for the administration of personalized cancer treatment plans.[1]
Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer Care at West Cancer Center & Research Institute
West Cancer Center’s lung cancer team is recognized for the exceptional care it provides to patients, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. Specialists are able to provide patients with access to clinical trials and the most advanced protocols. The lung cancer program treated over 1,000 newly diagnosed patients in 2022 for both non-small cell and small cell lung cancers.[2] The center was the first in the country to offer the first FDA-approved mesothelioma treatment offered in more than 15 years, the NovoTTF-110L tumor treating fields system.[3] Patients can receive treatment from medical oncology lead Dr. Ramakrishna Battini, the Director of the Lung Cancer Research Group Dr. Jason Porter, and Dr. David Portnoy, who sits on the Small Cell Lung Cancer Panel of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
