J. Matthew Reinersman, MD
Dr. J. Matthew Reinersman is a thoracic surgeon and thoracic oncologist who treats patients with lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, and other types of thoracic malignancies at the Stephenson Cancer Institute at Oklahoma University. He specializes in using robotic technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and minimize adverse effects.[1]
In addition to treating patients who have been diagnosed with these challenging diseases, Dr. Reinersman also serves as Director of Oklahoma University Health’s Lung Cancer Screening Clinic, which has achieved national recognition and has been designated a Screening Center of Excellence by the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer.
Education and Career
Dr. Reinersman earned a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. before attending medical school at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He returned to Washington for his General Surgery internship and residency at Georgetown University Hospital, simultaneously pursuing a research fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He then went on to pursue a residency in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.[1]
Dr. Reinersman is board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. Following completion of his medical education, Dr. Reinersman joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma and the Stephenson Cancer Center as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. He now leads the Section of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery within the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery.
Research
Dr. Reinersman’s research interests include preoperative risk stratification, early detection of lung cancer in pulmonary nodules, minimally invasive approaches to thoracic oncology, and molecular characteristics of lung cancer. He is particularly focused on improving surgical outcomes, optimizing care, increasing innovation, and introducing new technologies to the patients he serves in Oklahoma.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Reinersman is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the General Thoracic Surgical Club. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a peer reviewer for several professional and academic journals, including Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.[1]
