Jonathan C. Nesbitt, MD
Dr. Jonathan C. Nesbitt is Professor and Chair of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He has significant expertise in the management of diseases including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, diseases of the mediastinum, chest wall tumors, and pleural diseases, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. Dr. Nesbitt treats patients with complex thoracic tumors using minimally invasive approaches. He is a native of Nashville.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Nesbitt graduated from the University of Virginia, earning a bachelor of arts degree with honors in Biology. He went on to attend Georgetown University School of Medicine, then returned to Nashville to complete an internship and residency in General Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He served as Chief Resident of General Surgery at Vanderbilt, then moved on to Albany Medical Center to complete a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery. While there, he also served as an instructor in surgery at Albany Medical College and completed his residency in Albany as Chief Resident of Cardiothoracic Surgery.[1]
After completing his residency, Dr. Nesbitt began active duty in the United States Naval Reserve, serving at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda as Assistant Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He served in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and was honorably discharged as a Commander.[1]
Following his service, Dr. Nesbitt joined M.D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, where he served as Assistant Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery before being promoted to the position of Director of Clinical Education and Training Programs for the Division of Surgery and Anesthesiology and the Department of Thoracic and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Associate Surgeon/Associate Professor of Surgery with tenure, and Physician-in-Chief-On-Call. He then returned to Nashville to become Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Thomas Hospital before joining Vanderbilt Health.[1]
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Nesbitt is board-certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Research
Dr. Nesbitt’s research interests include combined modality therapy, complex intrathoracic neoplasms, resident education and training, and patient care quality improvement. He has focused extensively on the evaluation of multidisciplinary treatment for lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies. His recent publications include:[2]
