Daniel Miller, MD
Dr. Daniel Miller is a thoracic surgeon and surgical oncologist at Augusta University’s Georgia Cancer Center. He is considered a world leader and pioneer in the use of minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of thoracic malignancies, including pleural mesothelioma, lung cancer, and benign thoracic diseases.
Education and Career
Dr. Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky, and then went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Kentucky Medical School.
Following graduation, he completed an internship and residency in General Surgery and a Research Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He then completed fellowship training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Miller is currently a professor of surgery and the Director of Thoracic Surgery and the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Georgia Cancer Center.[1] He specializes in minimally invasive procedures, which he helped pioneer.
Board certified in Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Miller’s career has included serving as Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at the University of Louisville; as General Thoracic Surgeon at Mayo Clinic; As Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at Emory Healthcare; and as Chief of General Thoracic Surgery at WellStar Health System.
After serving as Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Atlanta’s Cancer Treatment Centers of America location, he accepted a position as Professor of Surgery and Director of Thoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University and as Director of Lung Cancer Screening at Georgia Cancer Center.[2]
Dr. Miller’s clinical interests include lung cancer, mesothelioma, esophageal cancer, laparoscopic surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), HITHOC for pleural malignancies, and postoperative pain control. He is also well known for providing advanced and aggressive surgery for pleural mesothelioma.
Research
Dr. Miller is actively involved in research focused on improving outcomes for patients with thoracic malignancies.
His areas of exploration include the use of CT scanning with Artificial Intelligence in lung cancer screening; the use of hyperthermic intrathoracic extracorporeal chemotherapy for isolated pleural metastasis and primary pleural malignancies; digital drainage systems after lung resection; and cryoablation for post-thoracic surgery pain management.
