Philip W. Carrott, MD
Dr. Philip W. Carrott is a thoracic surgeon specializing in lung transplantation and the treatment of lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies at UVA Health and UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center in Charlottesville, VA. His clinical practice includes treating esophageal cancer, pleural mesothelioma, paraesophageal hernias, and chest wall tumors. He leverages his skill in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques for all surgeries except lung transplants.[1]
Dr. Carrott sees patients with a wide variety of conditions related to the chest wall and lung. He is also the surgical director of the UVA Lung Transplant program, which serves patients in Central, Western, and Southern Virginia as well as West Virginia.
Education and Career
Dr. Carrott graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia with a bachelor’s degree and then earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, then pursued a research fellowship in esophageal disease at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle Washington. He then completed a fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia.[1]
After completing his education and training, Dr. Carrott accepted a position at the University of Michigan, where he was active in resident and medical student training and developing curriculum for University of Michigan students. He then moved on to Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, where he served as assistant professor of surgery in the Divisions of General Thoracic Surgery and Cardiothoracic Transplantation & Circulatory Support at Baylor College of Medicine.[3]

Dr. Carrott is a member of several professional societies, including the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery
Research
Dr. Carrott’s research interests include improving pre-operative conditioning of the stomach, usually through an outpatient laparoscopic procedure done a month before the procedure. He also investigates outcomes around minimally invasive procedures and how to improve patient recovery.[1]
