Carrie Luu, MD, FACS
Dr. Carrie Luu is a surgical oncologist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine’s Tucson Department of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology. She specializes in complex surgery for gastrointestinal and peritoneal cancers, using a combination of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy and cytoreductive surgery to treat diseases like malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Luu earned her medical degree from New York Medical College. She completed her internship and residency in General Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, during which she was honored with the Resident Research Paper Award from the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons Annual Meeting. She completed her medical education and training with fellowship training in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Florida.[1]
Dr. Luu joined the faculty at Saint Louis University Hospital in Missouri as an assistant professor of surgery before joining the University of Arizona Cancer Center.
Professional Memberships and Activities
Dr. Luu is active in numerous professional organizations and was elected to the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors as the Governor-at-Large representing the Fellows in the Arizona Chapter.[2] She is also a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Association of Women Surgeons, and Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.[1]
Research
Dr. Luu’s research interests include hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, gastrointestinal cancers, frailty, and geriatric oncology. Studies she has authored and co-authored have been published in PLoS One, the Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology, and JAMA Oncology.[1]
