Rajesh Ramanathan, MD
Dr. Rajesh Ramanathan is a surgical oncologist and specialist in gastrointestinal and abdominal surgery at Banner Health and Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert Arizona. He specializes in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, sarcoma and connective tissue surgical oncology, and peritoneal surface malignancies including malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Ramanathan is skilled in the complex surgical oncology procedure that combines cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The surgery, which can take hours, involves Dr Ramanathan surgically removing as much tumor material as possible and then infusing the surgical site with a heated, concentrated chemotherapy solution. The solution remains in the cavity for 90 minutes, killing any remaining cancer cells through direct contact rather than subjecting the patient to systemic chemotherapy and its adverse side effects.
Dr. Ramanathan performs minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery, whenever feasible. He collaborates with other physicians and cancer care professionals to ensure that each patient is offered a treatment plan that offers them the best possible outcome for their unique condition.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Ramanathan earned his medical degree at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and then completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He added to his surgical skills and knowledge with a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.[1]

Dr. Ramanathan’s research interests include robotic approaches to gastrointestinal and abdominal cancers. He has authored and co-authored articles that have appeared in highly respected, peer-reviewed medical journals.
