Bret Mitchell Schipper, MD, FACS, CPE
Dr. Bret Mitchell Schipper is a surgical oncologist and the Chief of Surgical Oncology at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. He is also Co-Physician-in-Chief of the Hartford HealthCare Digestive Health Institute and the Director of Oncologic Surgery for the entire Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute.
Dr. Schipper is board-certified in General Surgery and has multiple areas of expertise. His clinical interests include hepatobiliary surgery, minimally invasive robotic surgery, soft tissue and gastric cancers, and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in combination with cytoreductive surgery, a complex combination protocol that has proven effective in improving outcomes for patients diagnosed with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.[1]
Dr. Schipper also serves as assistant clinical professor in the departments of surgery at both the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and at Quinnipiac University School of Medicine.
Education and Career
Dr. Schipper attended the University of Florida as an undergraduate, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. He earned his medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. He completed an internship at the State University of New York Upstate University Medical Center and a Surgical Oncology residency and fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.[1]
Following completion of his fellowship, Dr. Schipper practiced as a surgical oncologist at the Hospital of Central Connecticut and at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, where he served as Director of the Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Program before joining Hartford Hospital.
