Matthew J. Schuchert, MD, FACS
Dr. Matthew J. Schuchert is a thoracic and cardiothoracic surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a member of both the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Division of Thoracic and Foregut Surgery and dedicates much of his practice to the care of patients with lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. He specializes in all aspects of thoracic surgical oncology, radiofrequency ablation, and CyberKnife.[1]
Dr. Schuchert is passionate about optimizing patient care through attentive surgical management and academic research.
Education and Career
Dr. Schuchert earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University, from which he graduated Magna Cum Laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed his General Surgery residency and Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Following the completion of his education, he accepted a faculty role and has been with UPMC ever since.[1]
Professional Activities and Memberships
Dr. Schuchert is a member of many professional and academic medical societies, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
He is an active and involved member of the Department of Thoracic Surgery’s educational leadership team and a previous Program Director of UPMC Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery’s Integrated Residency Program and Independent Fellowship Program. He is also involved in clinical and research mentorship of program appointees as Co-Director of the department’s NHLBI T32 Training Grant.[2]
Research
Dr. Schuchert is a highly accomplished scholar. His research interests include lung cancer immunology, how immune status influences outcomes in lung cancer, and achieving immunomodulation to augment the host response to tumors.
He has authored or co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed publications as well as numerous invited manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts, and presentations. He also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals.[2]
