Alexander S. Farivar, M.D.
Dr. Alexander S. Farivar is a cardiothoracic and thoracic surgeon at the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. His clinical practice focuses on patients diagnosed with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and malignant pleural mesothelioma. He has expertise in the use of robotic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques to improve patient outcomes, minimize pain, and maintain quality of life, and is skilled in both extrapleural pneumonectomy and pleurectomy and decortication.[1]
Dr. Farivar values the ability to work with a multidisciplinary team dedicated to patient well-being. The thoracic group enjoys access to state-of-the-art technology and collaborates with medical oncologists, pulmonologists, pathologists, radiologists, and radiation oncologists at a weekly tumor board where each patient’s case is discussed and treatment plans refined to deliver care that is best suited to their needs.
Education and Career
Dr. Farivar attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut as an undergraduate and then earned his medical degree at Boston University Medical School. He completed an internship and General Surgery residency at the University of Washington, followed by a Thoracic Surgery Track fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.[1]

Dr. Farivar is the Program Director of the Advanced Thoracic Fellowship Program at Swedish Medical Center. Additionally, he is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.[1]
Research
Dr. Farivar is actively engaged in research that focuses on improving the treatment options available to patients diagnosed with thoracic malignancies, including the application of multimodality treatment methods, http://robotic surgery, and the efficacy and safety of aggressive surgical techniques. He has authored several book chapters and reviews and authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed articles that have been published in highly respected medical journals.[1]
