Charles A. Powell, MD
Dr. Charles A. Powell is the Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an integral part of the facility’s lung cancer team. His clinical and research interests in malignant pleural mesothelioma make significant contributions to the multidisciplinary team’s approach to individual patient treatments, particularly in understanding the genetic and susceptibility factors of these diseases and the molecular events that take place during the early stages of tumor development and progression. He sees patients in consultation regarding lung nodules and lung cancer.[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Powell earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center followed by clinical and research fellowships at Boston University School of Medicine.
In addition to his role as Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Powell is a Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and CEO of the Mount Sinai Respiratory Institute, which brings together leading expertise in diagnosing and treating all forms of respiratory illness and lung disease, including cancers.[1]
Dr. Powell was the founding chair of the American Thoracic Society Assembly on Thoracic Oncology and was elected president of the Fleischner Society. He is a recipient of the American Cancer Society Research Scholar Award.[2]
Research
Dr. Powell’s research is focused on lung nodules and cancer. Funded by the National Institute of Health, he has published over 150 articles and directs an NIH-funded translational sciences laboratory that examines the genomics of lung cancer. He is particularly interested in deconvoluting the biology and genomics of early-stage lung adenocarcinoma and directs a research program focused on the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to advance the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases.
Professional Memberships
Dr. Powell is a member of several professional medical organizations, including the International Society of Respiratory Disease. He is chair of the International Multidisciplinary Adjudication Committee to evaluate interstitial lung disease adverse events in cancer clinical trials of antibody-drug conjugates that are sponsored by Daiichi Sankyo Inc. and Astra Zeneca Ltd. He is also a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.[1]
