David Sternberg, MD
Dr. David Sternberg is a board-certified surgeon, thoracic surgeon, and cardiothoracic surgeon who treats patients at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Steinberg specializes in minimally invasive chest surgery and serves on the facility’s tumor board. His particular areas of clinical interest include lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and lung nodules, and he is skilled in robotic surgery.[1]
Dr. Sternberg serves as a multidisciplinary team member on the Karmanos Gastrointestinal Oncology, Neuroendocrine Oncology, and Thoracic Oncology programs. Speaking of the collaborative approach at Karmanos, Sternberg says, “Cancer isn’t just my mission here; it’s everybody’s mission. Even if not everybody is focused on one cancer, everybody is focused on some cancer. Even if they’re not exactly in my field, we’re all like-minded spirits. And we’ve found that when we all work together as a team and discuss patients and collaborate, our efforts I believe, are significantly more than the sum of its parts.”[1]
Education and Career
Dr. Sternberg earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Brooklyn College, City University of New York, and his medical degree with honors in Biomedical Research from the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and General Surgical residency at Columbia University Medical Center, followed by fellowships in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cornell University Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He also completed a super fellowship in Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery and Lung Transplantation.[2]
Before accepting his role at Karmanos Cancer Institute, Dr. Sternberg served on the thoracic surgery teams at Beaumont Hospital Farmington Hills and the Henry Ford Health System.

Dr. Sternberg is an active and engaged researcher focused on improving outcomes for patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer and lung cancer. He has been Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on many clinical research projects.
