Seth D. Force, MD
Dr. Seth D. Force is a thoracic surgeon who specializes in treating patients diagnosed with lung cancer, and thoracic malignancies including malignant pleural mesothelioma, cardiac tumors, and esophageal cancer. He practices at Emory University School of Medicine, where he holds the title Kamal A. Mansour Professor in Thoracic Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery; the Winship Cancer Institute where he holds the title of Surgical Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program; and the Emory University Hospital, where he holds the titles of Surgical Director of the Adult Lung Transplant Program, Co-Director of the Emory Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Center, and Directory of the Emory Thoracic Surgery Robotics Program.[1]
During his surgical fellowship, Dr. Force trained under Dr. Joel Cooper, who is credited with performing the first successful lung transplant, and he carried his knowledge and expertise to Emory. Under his direction, Emory’s adult lung transplant program’s survival rates improved and its volume has tripled. Dr. Force has a national reputation for being skilled in minimally invasive surgery for lung and esophageal cancer and for his expertise in treating diseases of the mediastinum.[2]
Education and Career
Dr. Force earned a Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed an internship, fellowship, and residency in Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and then completed an additional fellowship in Thoracic Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.[1]
Since completing his medical education and training, Dr. Force has practiced at Emory Healthcare Network, the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, and the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Research
Dr. Force’s research focus is on outcomes research in lung transplantation and thoracic disease. His past research projects have concentrated on patient outcomes and novel techniques in thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. Current projects include evaluation of outcomes in patients with esophageal perforation and outcomes in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis undergoing single or double lung transplantation.[2]
